    Physics Results From Alpha Magnetic Spectrometer 1998 Shuttle Flight

    The Alpha Magnetic Spectrometer (AMS) is a particle detector designed to detect antimatter. During the 10-day test flight on the space shuttle in June 1998, AMS detected 10810^8 events. Upon analysis, no antimatter was found and the antimatter limit was reduced to 1.1×10−61.1\times10^{-6}. The proton spectrum shows some differences with the cosmic ray flux used in atmospheric neutrino simulation. A large amount of protons, positrons, and electrons were found below the geomagnetic rigidity cutoff. The energy of these particles are as high as several GeV, one order of magnitude higher than any previously measured energy in radiation belts. These particles also exhibit many interesting features.     The Alpha Magnetic Spectrometer detects a large amount of particles below rigidity cutoff. Those high energy particles create questions related to radiation belts and atmospheric neutrinos. To understand the origin of these particles, we use a trajectory tracing program to simulate particle trajectories in realistic geomagnetic field.     The Effects of Eicosapentaenoic Acid (EPA) and Docosahexaenoic Acid (DHA) on Brown Adipogenesis in Stem Cell Culture

    Polyunsaturated fatty acids (PUFAs), especially eicosapentaenoic acid (EPA) and docosahexaenoic acid (DHA), are major maternal dietary supplements due to their positive benefits on neurological tissue growth during the first 12 weeks of gestation. Previous studies show that EPA and DHA inhibit muscle formation but promote adipogenesis. However, no research has addressed the question whether high intake of EPA and DHA affects brown fat development during gestation. The objective of this study was to measure the effect of EPA and DHA supplement on brown adipogenesis and potential pathways related to mitochondrial biosynthesis using fibroblasts as in vitro model. Using Oil-Red-O staining and PCR testing, lipid droplet formation and tested six genes were examined and PGC1α presented statistically significant difference from the control group when treated with PUFAs. Results indicated that PGC1α gene expression can be to be alternated by EPA and DHA treatment. Mitochondrial biosynthesis can potentially be promoted by increased PGC1α gene expression. However, the lipid droplets accumulated in the PUFAs treated group show an unknown mechanism of the n-3 PUFA on adipogenesis that needs to be revealed

    The "hybrid" moments ∫T2T∣ζ(1/2+it)∣k(∫t−Gt+G∣ζ(1/2+ix)∣ℓdx)mdt \int_T^{2T}|\zeta(1/2+it)|^k{(\int_{t-G}^{t+G}|\zeta(1/2+ix)|^\ell dx)}^m dt of the Riemann zeta-function ζ(s)\zeta(s) on the critical line ℜs=1/2\Re s = 1/2 are studied. The expected upper bound for the above expression is Oϵ(T1+ϵGm)O_\epsilon(T^{1+\epsilon}G^m). This is shown to be true for certain specific values of the natural numbers k,ℓ,mk,\ell,m, and the explicitly determined range of G=G(T;k,ℓ,m)G = G(T;k,\ell,m). The application to a mean square bound for the Mellin transform function of ∣ζ(1/2+ix)∣4|\zeta(1/2+ix)|^4 is given.Comment: 27 page
